Wilson Creek Keepers Volunteer Program

The Wilson Creek Keepers program is a grassroots initiative driven by the need to continue to focus on protecting Wilson Creek and improving the experience of visitors to the area. These efforts are directed at raising the awareness of the “pack-it-in, pack-it-out” concept that will help improve the problem of trash along the river and roadways.

With limited federal and local government resources, there must be more citizen participation and concerted efforts to deal with the cleanliness and maintenance of the Wilson Creek area.

The Wilson Creek Keepers initiative is made up of three programs:

  1. Trail Partners
Specific persons and groups commit to adopt and regularly monitor and maintain Wilson Creek trails as allowed by the U.S. Forest Service
  2. Big Sweep
There are four Big Sweep clean-up efforts each year in the Wilson Creek gorge.
  3. The Keepers Patrol
Each weekend, 4 to 6 volunteers act as friendly ambassadors that welcome and assist visitors to the area. Volunteers become goodwill ambassadors that engage visitors in the gorge, in parking lots and other popular areas to increase the environmental awareness along Wilson Creek. Groups wear recognizable vests, carry fist aid kits, and are in constant radio contact with Brown Mountain Beach Resort.
